Queen Elizabeth’s Bentley

The Bentley State Limousine is the official state car created by Bentley for Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee in 2002.

The vehicle’s twin-turbocharged, 6.75-litre V8 Engine has been modified from Bentley’s Arnage version to produce 400hp (300W) and 616lb/ft (835N/m) of torque. Maximum speed is 130mph (210km/h) so it’s not slow despite its size.

The State Limousine is three feet (91.44 cm) longer than a standard Bentley Arnage, 10inches (254mm) taller, and six inches (152.4mm) wider. It is equipped with broad coach doors that open to the rear almost 90 degrees.

British textile manufacturer Hield Brothers produced the Lambswool Sateen cloth used for the upholstery of the rear  seats.

Only two of these vehicles were built, making it even rarer than the Rolls-Royce Phantom IV, of which just 18 were built for royalty and heads of state.

The Bentley is used only on official engagements and when the Queen is aboard so we expect to see it used on the visit to Ireland. It is always escorted by a selection of marked and unmarked Royal Protection Squad vehicles as well as local police vehicles and motorcycle outriders. She also uses it to travel to church when at Balmoral and Sandringham House.

Like all British state cars, the Bentley has a mount on its roof for an illuminated crest and a pennant, which can be inserted from inside the vehicle. These both usually feature the Royal Standard, although other symbols can be used for occasions such as a state visit. When Her Majesty The Queen is on board, the Bentley “Flying B” hood ornament is replaced by the Her Majesty’s personal mascot of St George slaying the dragon.

In January 2009, it was announced that the Queen’s Bentley would be converted to run on biofuels.

Nissan win NYC Yellow Cab Deal

Nissan NV200 New York Yellow Cab
The Nissan NV200 has just been chosen as The New York City Taxi of tomorrow. The Nissan beat off competition including Ford’s Transit Connect and Turkish automaker Karsan’s V1.

The NV200 was picked by the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission after a selection process that lasted two years. Destined to replaceNew York’s existing taxi fleet mainly made up of Ford Crown Victorias, the NV200 will become the city’s exclusive taxi beginning in 2013.

Winning the competition means Nissan receives a 10-year contract as the official supplier of taxis for the city, which currently employs more than 13,000 yellow cabs. “The NV200 taxi will give Nissan the opportunity to showcase our dedication to vehicle quality and urban mobility to more than 600,000 passengers every day,” said Carlos Tavares, Chairman of Nissan Americas.

Essentially a modified form of Nissan’s compact commercial van, the NV200 taxi was chosen for its versatility, safety and standard features. Engineered with fuel efficiency and low emissions in mind,New York’s new cab will be powered by a 2.0-litre engine. Cabin volume is claimed to also be significantly increased over current taxis, accommodating up to four passengers with luggage. A transparent roof panel will offer passengers a view of New York’s skyline. Or, if they’re tired of the view, convenience features like overhead reading lights and a mobile charging station with 12-volt outlet and two USB ports allow passengers to occupy themselves with a book or mobile device.

Although its list of features is pretty impressive for a fleet vehicle, the NV200 wasn’t the early odds-on favorite of the competition.  Passengers will most likely consider the NV200 a big improvement in versatility and practicality over the current Ford Crown Victoria-based taxis driving around New York City today.

Turkish GP Quick Review

Turkey the venue for the fourth GP of 2011 and Sebastian Vettel once again starts from pole with team-mate Mark Webber alongside him. Nico Rosberg in third doing a great job against team-mate Michael Schumacher in qualifying.

Rosberg took second from Webber on the start and Hamilton trying to get past Webber lost out badly as he went too deep into a turn as he came alongside the Australian. Lap 2 saw Petrov and Schumacher come together causing Schumacher to pit while on a charge.

Lap 5  saw Hamilton and Button scrap hard for position while Webber took Nico in the braking zone very cleanly. This played into Vettels hands as he maintained a 4.4 second lead at this point.

Alonso looked very comfortable all over the back of Rosberg during lap 7 eventually taking the place as the Mercedes just looked a different car in race trim. The battle between Button and Hamilton passed and repassed each other with the aid of DRS.

Lap 10 saw Ferrari out performed by McLaren in the pits with Massa and Hamilton side by side down the pit lane but Massa had to concede the place as the Pit exit wall loomed large, two into one small gap doesn’t go.

The gap between 1st and 2nd closed as Button took his pit stop to go onto hard tyres on lap 13. Schumacher down in 13th place struggled in traffic as he tried to recover from the incident at the start of the race that forced him to pit early. As the race progressed he looked less and less comfortable as Mercedes pace did not match that of qualifying. It may well be that turn 8 was causing the rear tyres to perish so quickly that traction was severely compromised as pit to car radio messages from the team urged their drivers to protect the tyres through Turkeys most famous corner.

Lap 22 saw a great move by Jenson Button on Nico Rosberg passing on the outside of turn 14 showing incredibly quick thinking as Rosberg blocked the apex of the turn expecting a dive down the inside.

Lap 25 Vettel leads having pumped in some great laps  protecting his tyres better than his team-mate.

With 24 laps to go Vettel still leads and Hamilton pits  A delay in the pits for the Brit put him way back into the pack but once he got back on track he seemed to love his new tyres as he set blistering lap times but with a mountain to climb it was never going to be easy.

With a dozen laps to go Webber was flying as Button was out in front as most cars pitted. Lap 50 saw Hamilton and Button swap places as Buttons tyres were some 7 laps older than his team mates.

A great duel between Alonso and Webber for 2nd place gave the fans what they wanted with wheel to wheel racing.

Jenson Buttons tyres were simply unable to support his fight as Rosberg took him on lap 55  4 Stops and 5 sets of tyres was proven to be the way to go at this race.

With 2 laps to go Vettel leads from Webber, with Alonso in third. Lewis Hamiltons race was ruined by that pit stop but he won’t be too disappointed with 4th and ahead of his team mate. A great Grand Prix with action through out. 73 pit stops in this race was the most we’ve seen in a race for many years possibly not since that famous Senna drive in 1993 at a rain-soaked Donnington have we had this many tyre centre visits.

Vettel took the win with Webber in second. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner: said “It’s a very sweet victory, brilliantly executed by both drivers. Good strategy, great race. Mark needed to pass Alonso and he made it stick; he had a new set of primes at the end of the race and they really worked out well for him.”

If you missed it catch the highlights it’s well worth a look.
